Diving Lake Michigan - Diving
Manistee Area Lake Michigan Shipwrecks. Many shipwrecks were chronicled by word of mouth or old records. Manistee's local newspaper was not in existence when most of the shipwrecks happened back in the mid 1800's thus leaving the recording of the wrecks to Chicago or Milwaukee newspaper reports, or old timers accounts, old records or books. The Manistee Historical Museum on River Street in Manistee can be contacted locally for more information. We have an old "treasure" map from 1957, which gives approximate locations and states some may be intact if down in over 30 ft. of water. Ships known to have been wrecked off Manistee County's Lake Michigan coast are listed below. In some cases, their true locations are not known due to shifting sands or if lost in shallow waters.
