Who Needs to Take a Snowmobile Safety Course?



Did you know. . .

. . . that Michigan is known by snowmobilers nationwide for its unique combination of abundant and dependable snow, exciting terrain, and extensive trail network. Over 5,800 miles of snowmobile trails are located throughout the state in six State Forests, three National Forests, and many acres of privately owned lands.

Michigan is one of only three states that offer a large system of interconnected snowmobile trails. Snowmobile safety training is available through the Department of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Division. More than 100 grooming tractors are used by 17 DNR, Forest Management Division offices and by 61 grants program sponsors to groom the 5,800 + mile trail system.

. . . the average age of a snowmobile owner is 41 years old.
. . . the average annual household income for snowmobilers is $70,000.
. . . the average snowmobiler rides their snowmobile 990 miles per year.
. . . the average snowmobiler spends $4,000 each year on snowmobile-related recreation, tourism and products.
. . . 75% of snowmobile owners are married. The average snowmobile family has 0.8 children living in the home with them.

Snowmobile Trail Permit:
In addition to registration of a snowmobile in Michigan or from another state or province, a person who desires to operate a snowmobile in this state needs to purchase a snowmobile trail permit sticker. The snowmobile trail permit sticker is valid for 1 year which begins October 1 and ends September 30 of the following year.

Snowmobile trail permits are available at the following: 
On-Line at the DNR E-License Web site  - Your sticker will be mailed to you within 7-10 days.
